In our experience, which has some 15 years behind it, we always advise partners to look into correctly tracking their visitors and collecting as much data as they can, so that they can provide the best experience they can for their customers. From a financial standpoint, knowing where your budgets are flowing and via which channels you're generating revenue is key to growth and being able to compete for your market share.

An affiliate is a person or party who has a way of engaging online users (known as traffic generation) via a number of methods, for example; social media, blogging, streaming, owning a website, content creation. They leverage this ability and the time/money spent in engaging those visitors, to recommend products and services that those visitors might enjoy. This happens through banners and urls generally. As an example, a cooking blog might recommend a food mixer to its visitors. For each food mixer that is sold to a reffered vistor, the affiliate makes a commission.
